Partner Spotlight: Pop-Up Magazine Productions Loves the Art of Storytelling
Pop-Up Magazine Productions is reimaging how we experience storytelling. Their award-winning weekend digital and print publication, The California Sunday Magazine, delivers ambitious features and cinematic photography from across California, the West, Asia, and Latin America, to a national audience. Their Pop-Up Magazine, a live experience, features well-known and emerging writers, filmmakers, photographers, radio producers, animators, and illustrators bringing their true stories onstage with an orchestra performing an original score. Since its debut in a small theater in San Francisco, Pop-Up Magazine shows have been produced in grand historic theaters across the United States.
We are so excited to talk about creative collaboration with this partner. In/Visible Talks Co-Founder Arianna Orland will be chatting with Photography Director Jackie Bates and Creative Director Leo Jung at the 2019 In/Visible Talks conference (learn a bit more about Jackie and Leo through their answers to our 5 Questions). As a fabulous warm-up, Co-Founder and Publisher Chas Edwards shares some of their story with us here.
How does your brand’s team collaborate with the creative community?
“At Pop-Up Magazine Productions, we work with creative storytellers from a variety of backgrounds. Whether it’s working with writers, radio producers, documentary filmmakers, and even performance artists on stage at Pop-Up Magazine; commissioning artwork and photography for California Sunday Magazine; or collaborating with our sponsors to create powerful story ads, we’re interested in working with storytellers to explore important issues and ideas, and to bring people together.”
What was the #1 reason you chose to partner with In/Visible Talks?
“We feel In/Visible Talks and Pop-Up Magazine Productions share a belief in the power of art and design to tell memorable stories. We’re thrilled to connect more deeply with In/Visible Talks community—and hope they’ll enjoy flipping through the pages of the California Sunday Magazine and come to a Pop-Up Magazine show when we’re next on tour.”
Where does your team look for inspiration?
“Most of our inspiration comes from other people and the creative work they’re doing. We’re insatiable fans, and we spend as much time as we can talking to dynamic, creative people making powerful, beautiful, and thought-provoking stuff.”
Our brand’s biggest creative win was….
“Our creative team, led by Creative Director Leo Jung and Photography Director Jacqueline Bates, set an enormously high bar for design at California Sunday Magazine. Since launching in 2014, it’s been the winner of three National Magazine Awards (one for Design, two back-to-back for Photography). This year they outdid themselves, bringing home the top prize at the 2018 Society of Publication Designers (SPD) Awards, for Magazine of the Year!”
Share one creative thing your team does that is a part of your brand culture.
“Pop-Up Magazine Productions is all about producing stories worthy of your attention. We apply that line of thinking on our business side, too: Our Brand Studio works with brands to tell their stories through magazine-style features, films, and live experiences. Whether it’s producing animated shorts for Google Play (featuring Rashida Jones, Jack Black, and Reggie Watts), a series of artful city guides for Coach, or a musical bedtime story for Squarespace (narrated live onstage by Jeff Bridges), our Brand Studio producers deploy the tools of journalism, storytelling, and design to create smart, stylish campaigns.”
