March 2020 Design & Art Event Hotlist

March design, art, and inspiration event “must dos” curated by In/Visible Talks Co-Founders Arianna Orland and Dava Guthmiller.
Lectures, happy hours, and exhibitions are happening all over the San Francisco Bay Area this month, and we’ve got recommendations for the ones you can’t miss. In/Visible Talks’ co-founders and long-time practicing designers Arianna Orland and Dava Guthmiller have curated their list of events for picking up creative inspiration—and maybe a new piece of art. Read on and sign up early, as space is limited at some of these.
More is More, Sometimes: In Defense of Display Typefaces.
At this Letterform-hosted event, graphic and type designer Marta Bernstein encourages us to enrich our usual typographic palette with something decorative, catchy, and not necessarily timeless. Free. March 3, 6:00 to 7:30 pm. San Francisco Public Library, Koret Auditorium, 100 Larkin Street, San Francisco.
Type Thursday.
Socialize with and meet other designers. Network and catch up with friends over drinks and light snacks. Participate in a Type Crit. These gatherings happen monthly, and we pick up new ideas and inspiration at every one. $0–$10. March 5, 6:00 to 9:00 pm. San Francisco Center for the Book, 375 Rhode Island Street, San Francisco.
It’s a Moment.
We love the Minnesota Street Project’s first Saturday nights, and we’re excited to check out their lectures. For this one, in collaboration with McEvoy Foundation for the Arts and Pro Arts Gallery & Commons, they invite culturally and artistically diverse thinkers to envision a collective future for the arts. Free. March 6, 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Pro Arts Gallery & Commons, 150 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland.
Design Lab Happy Hour: Climate Chaos + Creativity.
Artist Linda Gass will lead a hands-on, deep dive into the current exhibition, and then this happened…. Her work uses exacting processes of silk dyeing and stitching to represent topography, urban space, and nature. Sip a beverage during the demo, then give silk painting a try. $25–$35. March 13, 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Museum of Craft and Design, 2569 3rd Street, San Francisco.
August de los Reyes: The Power of Inclusive Design.
Designer August de los Reyes will talk about the life-transforming accident that changed his work. Hear about his high-level approach to Inclusive Design—how it can extend beyond product accessibility—and his modest proposal for good design in the 21st century. Free. March 18, 6:00 to 8:00 pm. California College of the Arts, Nave Alcove, 1111 8th Street, San Francisco.
