June 2020 Design & Art Event Hotlist

Get online this month with INVT’s curated list of “must do” creative events.

In response to earlier sheltering-in-place orders (and uncertainty about the future), many of our favorite in-person creative events have transitioned to online events. We’re choosing to see that as a good thing, because it allows so many more of us to participate.

With a long list of great opportunities and events coming up, In/Visible Talks’ co-founders Arianna Orland and Dava Guthmiller took some time to peruse the possibilities and pick their “must dos” for June.

Stay healthy, stay creative, and stay inspired!

The Human Moment.

Every Friday, the brilliant minds of SYPartners  and Keith Yamashita (one of our design heroes) are teaming up to help leaders, teams, and individuals discover the resilience, calm, and creativity we need to move through the COVID-19 crisis. Each 90-minute session uses powerful storytelling, artistic performance, and inspiration to lead us through the stages of collective trauma, grief, and ultimately renewal. Free. Access Sessions 1 & 2 any time; remaining sessions are coming soon. Online.

Index-Card-A-Day Challenge.

The simple index card is getting a creative makeover! For 61 days, we’ll experiment with whatever art materials we have on hand. Write haiku, paint landscapes, make polka dots, stamp hand-carved eraser stamps, invent doodle designs, draw portraits, or…? Check out the Daisy Yellow Art website for details, ideas, and inspiration. Join the Instagram community for free, or pay $9-$19 to interact with other challengers. June 1 through July 31. Online.

Redesigners in Action Webinar Series.

Creative Reaction Lab is bringing people together to cultivate a mindset that produces action in equity, inclusion, and justice. Webinar topics include “Introduction to Equity-Centered Community Design,” “Centering Power & Healing,” and “Listening More + Speaking Less.” Together we’ll identify and address inequity in our lives—and our professions. Some webinars have limited attendance, so register soon. Costs vary. Dates and times vary. Online.

SF Design Week.

San Francisco Design Week is transitioning to become the first regional design festival to go virtual during the pandemic. Along with thousands of other attendees, we’ll be connecting online for virtual experiences, digital programming, and live-streamed studio crawls. $39 gets you an all-access pass to most programming. June 15-25. Online.

Adobe 99U Conference.

Adobe’s 99U is one of those in-person conferences we look forward to every year, and this year’s digital event—with the theme “The Creative Self”—is no exception. Speakers will inspire us to explore what it means to be creative by calling on us to unpack our creative identities, establish our purposes, nurture our talents, and define success on our own terms. The stellar speaker lineup includes Taeyoon Choi, Kelli Anderson (INVT ’18), and Anna Sale. Check the website for details and updates on the schedule. Free. June 17. Online.

Primer 2020: Activating Futures.

Together we’ll be sharing diverse perspectives and practices, imagining alternative paths, and challenging ourselves to enable more equitable futures through the further democratization of the tools for building them. How can we apply speculative practices in order to manifest futures for all? Over the six days of the conference, we’ll answer that question and empower our community to act through the exploration of six themes, including Civic Futures, Inclusive Futures, and Digital Futures. Free. June 22-27. Online.

Introduction to Being an Antiracist.

Kim Crayton, The Antiracist Economist, is “causing a scene” with her virtual event for “white folx who are struggling with where and how to start their antiracist journey”. The INVT team will be attending. As part of her 21-Day Challenge, she’ll help us to “Be An Active Learner,” “Commit To Minimizing Harm,” and “Share What You’re Learning.” Plan ahead so you have time to complete the pre-event homework. Please note: All ages are welcome, but the material is designed for adults and there will be no censoring of language. $30. June 27. Timing TBD. Online.

We hope to be out and about next month with a new list of “must-do” events around the Bay Area. Be sure to check out the In/Visible Talks blog for updates.
