January 2022 Design & Art Event Hotlist

INVT’s curated list of “must do” creative events is designed to inspire.
Each and every month, INVT co-founders and practicing designers Arianna Orland and Dava Guthmiller review the many invitations that fill their inboxes and share their curated “Hotlist” of “must-do” design & art events in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
Even though we aren’t yet sure where COVID will take us in coming weeks, we do know we can find creative inspiration and beauty through amazing design & art events online and in the San Francisco Bay Area.
So let’s kick off 2022 by firing up our imaginations, setting new goals based on our hopes and dreams, and celebrating amazing artists who lift our spirits.
Please note: Following COVID safety protocols, many events require proof of vaccination, face masks, and social distancing. Check each event’s website for details.
The Unreal Garden.
Reconnect with your imagination in this fantastic holographic experience. Explore a space filled with magical flora, fauna, and artworks, and transform it all with your own presence and energy. $30 to $45. Now through January 2. 10 South Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco.
Lands End Exhibition at the Former Cliff House.
For this exhibition, 27 contemporary artists and collectives from around the world address the fragility of our planet’s health, human rights, racial equity, sustainability, and forced migration. Through their work, the artists offer hope and possibility in the face of crisis. Free (though you’ll need a reservation for timed entries). Now through March 27. 1090 Point Lobos Avenue, San Francisco.
Vision Board Workshop and Fundraiser.
Kick off the new year with some good karma! INVT18 Speaker Maria Guidice will lead us in this fun workshop as we think about our hopes and dreams and set our goals and intentions for 2022. The fee is a suggested donation of $100, which will go to a worthy nonprofit. January 2, 9:00 am to noon. Online.
Elemental Arts Earthscape Experience.
Part mediation, part collaboration, all co-creation, this outdoor community-building event invites us to commune with nature and create large-scale, ephemeral art. Suggested donation of $40 to $85. January 15. Location along San Francisco’s Great Highway will be emailed upon registration.
FOG Design + Art Fair.
With 45 leading international galleries and prominent 20th-century and contemporary design dealers participating—plus programs on contemporary design and art—this long-weekend event will surely inspire us. $25. January 20 to 23. Fort Mason Center, San Francisco.
The City Canvas: A Paint the Void Retrospective.
When San Francisco shut down for COVID shelter-in-place, local artists lifted our spirits by creating beautiful works throughout the city on boarded-up storefronts. Let’s celebrate these artists and a selection of their murals in this special exhibit. Free with registration. January 22 to 30. Pier 70, 588 22nd Street, San Francisco.
Sound Bath.
Now offered monthly, this immersive sound event takes full advantage of the beautiful, light-filled Grace Cathedral. Come for deep relaxation through a listening experience that helps you hear your own internal sounds and promotes mental clarity. It’s just what we need to start the new year. $20 to $75. January 24, 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Grace Cathedral, 1100 California Street, San Francisco.
