December 2019 Design & Art Event Hotlist
’Tis the season to shop! For this month’s curated list of inspiring design and art events, In/Visible Talks’ co-founders (and long-time practicing designers) Arianna Orland and Dava Guthmiller have selected some of their favorite stops for holiday browsing and purchasing. Bay Area shows and sales and fairs, featuring the work of local creatives and makers, are among their picks. Best of all, they’re all free, so you can spend your money on gifts for others—and yourself!
Creativity Explored Holiday Art Shop.
All season long, experience and shop the salon-style pop-up, curated by the Creativity Explored team with affordable and unique original art created by 135 artists working in the studios. Pick up items to deck your walls as well as artful stocking stuffers such as trendy enamel pins, apparel, art supply kits, and their always popular notecards. You’ll definitely make it onto Santa’s “Nice” list, because 50% of the proceeds from any art sale go directly to the artist. Free. November 29 through December 31. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Thursday: 10 am to 7:00 pm; Saturday, November 30: noon to 5:00 pm; Saturdays in December: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Creativity Explored Gallery, 3245 Sixteenth Street, San Francisco.
100 under 100 Group Art Show.
At Fleet Wood SF, you’ll find over 100 pieces of art—all priced to sell at $100 or less! They pack the walls with inspiration and host the opening reception with SF First Thursdays: Lower Polk / TL Art Walk. Enjoy beverages from Pine Street Brewery, food, and tunes while you shop. Free. December 5. 3:00 to 10:00 pm. Fleet Wood SF, 839 Larkin Street, San Francisco.
Join IDEO for a night on the pier celebrating local crafters, artists, and designers. Enjoy 50+ independent vendors, food trucks, and live jazz piano from DJ Lebowitz. Free. Tickets are limited, and registration via Eventbrite is required for entry. (Please note: They will let ticket holders in as capacity allows throughout the night. Entrance priority will be given to IDEO employees.) December 5. 4:30 to 8:00 pm. IDEO, Pier 28 Annex, The Embarcadero, San Francisco.
Celebrate independent contemporary craft and design as you check off your holiday shopping list at Style ’19. Museum of Craft and Design, 2569 Third Street, San Francisco.
Local Affairs: Small Press Book Bazaar.
Local Affairs is San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s (SFMOMA) series of events dedicated to local arts communities. A festive book sale, Small Press Book Bazaar will be held on opening day of the new exhibition Printed Publics: Contemporary Art and Design Publishing in the Bay Area. In collaboration with The Black Aesthetic, Cantíl, Colpa Press, The Poetry Center, and Small Press Distribution, SFMOMA has invited a number of small local presses to participate. Free. December 8. 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. SFMOMA, 151 Third Street, San Francisco.
SFMade Holiday Fair at CCA.
Over 60 different SFMade vendors will be offering their wares at this holiday shopping extravaganza.
