December 2018 Design & Art Event Hotlist
’Tis the season to get inspired, and the Bay Area once again is gifting us with an abundance of events and experiences for designers, artists, and creatives. To help you decide which ones make it into your busy holiday schedule, In/Visible Talks’ co-founders and long-time practicing designers Arianna Orland and Dava Guthmiller present their curated list of “Must-Dos” for the month.
You might spend a long winter’s night at the Exploratorium’s adults-only festival of lights. If you have long winter’s day available, there’s lots to see and learn at the exhibition about the influential work of Charles and Ray Eames. You’ll still have time to wrap up your gift shopping at the art and gift fairs—and pick up something sweet for yourself.
We wish you a happy and creative holiday season!
The World of Charles and Ray Eames.
Charles and Ray Eames, two of the most influential designers of the 20th century, valued knowledge and discovery, embraced the joy of trial and error, and saw no separation between life and work. This intimate and inspiring exhibition goes beyond their most well-known designs and portrays their legacy and lives in California. Allow plenty of time, as there’s a ton to see. Through February 17, 2019. Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak Street (at 10th Street), Oakland.
Holiday Art Shop.
Creativity Explored is one of our favorite local nonprofits, in part because 50% of the proceeds from any art sale goes directly to the artist. Check out the unique offerings at their Holiday Art Shop, from ceramics and sculpture to paintings and digital prints. You’ll also find cards and wrapping paper. Opening Celebration on November 29, 7–10 pm; shop through December 31. Creativity Explored, 3425 16th Street, San Francisco.
Holiday Book Arts & Crafts Fair 2018.
Get into the holiday spirit and support local artists at San Francisco Center for the Book’s annual Holiday Fair. They’ll have everything from letterpress books, zines, and hand-bound journals, to holiday cards, wrapping paper, and original prints. Free admission. December 1, 10 am–5 pm. San Francisco Center for the Book, 375 Rhode Island Street, San Francisco.
Gray Area Showcase.
Using augmented reality, physical objects, and everything in between, 20 artists will transform the Grand Theater into a dynamic series of interactive installments. The Gray Area Showcase is an exhibit of artwork fostered within their Creative Development programs. December 5 at 7 pm; December 6 at 6 pm. Gray Area Art + Technology, 2665 Mission Street, San Francisco.
After Dark: Glow.
At the Exploratorium’s adults-only (18+) “After Dark” program, get lost in over 650 interactive exhibits exploring perception, art, and science. “Glow” is the annual festival of ebullient lights and subtle glows featured in special installations and kinetic sculptures. Grab your friends—and a drink—and get immersed in mind-bending experiences and thought-provoking programs. December 6, 6–10 pm. The Exploratorium, Pier 15 (Embarcadero at Green Street), San Francisco.
2018 SFMade Holiday Fair at CCA.
SFMade + California College of the Arts = match made in gift-giving heaven. Over 60 SFMade vendors participate in a shopping extravaganza of holiday gift items—including jewelry, chocolates, apparel, and toys—all made in San Francisco. Check off everyone on your list, then pick up some treats for yourself. Free admission. December 16, 11 am–5 pm. California College of the Arts, 1111 8th Street, San Francisco.
