August 2020 Design & Art Event Hotlist

Find new ways to get inspired with INVT’s curated list of “must do” creative events.

We’ve been super inspired lately as we’ve watched companies and organizations adapt to the changing needs of our COVID-impacted marketplace. Conferences, workshops, and series have all gone online to reach their audiences, and as an added bonus, more people are now able to participate from afar.

After taking a close look at all the fantastic opportunities for learning and growth—as creatives and humans—available to us this month, In/Visible Talks’ co-founders Arianna Orland and Dava Guthmiller picked their “must dos” and offer them up for your consideration. We hope you find events here that inspire and motivate you.

Stay creative!

IMAGINATE@home | Artist-led Workshops for Everyone.

Celebrate the work of Creativity Explored artists and join members of the CE community in making art together. During each hour-long, virtual session, the lead artist will share a prompt to stimulate our imaginations and direct our creative energy. All ages, abilities, and experience levels are welcome. Free for CE donors, friends, and family. There are also 10 spots open to the general public. (If the public spots are taken, what better time to become a donor?) Saturdays, August 1 (with featured artist Rory Wright), 8 (Joseph “JD” Green), and 15 (Yukari Sakura), 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Online

Color Theory with Rea Lynn de Guzman.

In this two-session workshop, learn the essentials of mixing colors for making art: color theory, application, and washes for painting, illustrating, and more! When was the last time you worked on color theory? When was the last time you tried to think about color off the computer? It’s time. Donate what you can to cover costs; $80 is suggested. Plan ahead so you have your supplies ready; a “Kit” is available for purchase through Arch. August 4 and 6, 3:00 to 5:00 pm PDT. Online

BitRate: Machine Learning & Music Series.

In this series of remote workshops, lectures, and community hacks, Gray Area is teaming up with the Magenta team at Google to explore the creative integration of machine learning, music, and art in new software applications. In what new ways might we connect at a distance? There’s also an opportunity to submit creative work to win cash and hardware prizes. Open to everyone; no prior knowledge is required. Free. August 7 through September 7. Online.

Empathy & Experience Design Workshop.

Join Odyssey Works in exploring how everything we design—a product or live performance, an organizational structure or digital interface—succeeds or fails in the experience of the user. In this workshop, we’ll learn how to design for the deepest possible impact and practice empathy as the springboard for strong design. Suggested donation of $30. August 22. Online.

5 to 9 Conference.

We’re feeling inspired already ahead of this three-day conference, from our friends at Design X, about side projects and freelancing. We’ll learn from 15+ experts on how we can leverage the power of side projects to diversify our income streams and launch our passion projects. Topics include ideas and information on pitching for venture capital, starting an agency, finding our audience, and building community for our projects. Early Bird Ticket $40. August 25 to 27. Online.

How to be An Antiracist at Home.

Anti-racism isn’t just a box you check off, it’s a daily practice. The amazing Kim Crayton tells it like it is in this event that’s specifically designed for white folx who are beginning their anti-racist journeys. We, as a team, attended a previous workshop and learned a ton from Kim and the valuable lessons she’s teaching. Plan ahead, as some pre-event work is required (material is available through the link) and watching the three-hour livestream recording of “Introduction to Being An Antiracist” ($30) is recommended. $30. August 29, 8:00 to 11:00 am PDT. All registered attendees will also gain access to the recording after the event. Online.
